Die große Völkerverständigung
Depeche Mode ist eben alles andere als die eindimensionale Synthiepop-Band, als die sie manchmal noch abgetan wird. Früh und immer wieder veränderten sich die Briten stilistisch, textlich und natürlich musikalisch, befreiten sich aus so mancher Schublade, in die sie sich vielleicht sogar selbst manövriert hatten. Wir schreiten die über 40-jährige Karriere dieser Band ab, die so einflussreich ist, dass sie sogar irgendwie den Gegensatz zwischen elektronischer Musik und Rock aufheben konnte. Ohne Crossover-Krach, völlig fließend. Damit haben sie vielleicht zur größten Völkerverständigung der Musikgeschichte beigetragen. Unsere Liste beginnt bei den futuristischen Anfängen der frühen 1980er-Jahre und endet aktuell, denn auch mit ihren neuen Songs können Depeche Mode auch besonders kritische Fans immer wieder überzeugen.
1.Ice Machine (1981)
Am 20. Februar 1981 erschien mit Dreaming Of Me die ersten Single von Depeche Mode – Ice Machine war die B-Seite. Und die deckte sofort und unvermittelt auf, worum es bei der Band in den kommenden 40 Jahren immer auch gehen würde: ein ganz eigenes Verständnis von Sound, getrieben von der Liebe zur Popmusik, verpackt in mitunter experimentellen Klang. Aus dem herrlich wackelnden Beat und den nicht ganz korrekt gestimmten Synths entwickelt sich ein sanfter Slammer, der vielen Fans der Band noch heute die Welt bedeutet. Von Dreaming Of Me spricht hingegen kaum noch jemand. Ein echtes Stück Futurismus, das das Versprechen des britischen Synthpops der frühen 1980er-Jahre in vier Minuten und sechs Sekunden exemplarisch auf den Punkt trifft.
2. Oberkorn (It’s A Small Town) ( Development Mix) (1982)
Dieses Instrumental erschien in der ersten schwierigen Phase von Depeche Mode. Songwriter Vince Clarke hatte die Band verlassen, das Weiterbestehen lastete von nun an auf den Schultern von Martin Gore. Die 12″-Version von Oberkorn – der B-Seite von The Meaning Of Love – ist vielschichtig und musikalisch komplex: hell, dunkel, freundlich und düster-melancholisch im steten Wechsel. Genau so, wie sich das Leben überall gestaltet. Ob nun in der „big city“ oder der „small town“. Eine zeitlose Komposition, die auch heute noch wie ein Fels in der Brandung des Katalogs der Band besteht.
3. The Landscape Is Changing (1983)
Die Produktion des dritten DM-Albums Construction Time Again war auf mehreren Ebenen einschneidend. Nach einer umfangreichen Asien-Tour kehrte die Band mit neuer Agenda ins Studio zurück – textlich und musikalisch. Stichwort: Globalisierung. Herausgerissen aus der Londoner Vorstadt Basildon verarbeitete Martin Gore seine Eindrücke einer zweigeteilten Welt. Die eine Hälfte produziert, die andere konsumiert. Musikalisch dreht sich auf diesem Album alles um das Sampling, also den Zugang zu allen Sounds der Welt auf digitalem Wege. The Landscape Is Changing steht exemplarisch für den Wandel der Gruppe. Textlich engagiert und musikalisch visionär. Und für den Startschuss ihrer „Berliner Phase“ in den Hansa-Studios der Mauerstadt.
4. Shake The Disease (1985)
Bis zum Jahre 1985 funktionierten Depeche Mode wie ein Uhrwerk, jedes Jahr kam pünktlich ein Album. 1985 wurde pausiert, lediglich zwei Singles erschienen: It’s Called A Heart und eben Shake The Disease. Glaubt man Martin Gore, war er jahrelang kein großer Fan seines eigenes Songs mehr. Es sei ihm gegönnt. Dabei ist der Track ein großes Stück melancholischer Popmusik, sperrig und doch endlos widerhallend. Auf den letzten Tourneen der Band war der Track dann wieder vermehrt zu hören – gesungen von Gore und am Piano begleitet von Peter Gordeno. War er also doch noch einsichtig, unser Martin. Gut gemacht.
5. Never Let Me Down Again (1987)
Dieser Song gilt heute als einer der größten Hits von Depeche Mode überhaupt, und das aus gutem Grund: Vor allem live entfaltet der Track eine unglaubliche Wirkung. Er ist Sänger Dave Gahan auf den Leib geschneidert. Die zerrende Gitarre, die wuchtigen Drums und die epischen Melodien sind ein Kapitel für die Ewigkeit. Beim Schlagzeug-Sound verließ sich die Band auf ihren Toningenieur David Bascombe, der mit Tears For Fears bereits in ähnlicher Richtung gearbeitet hatte. Über die richtige Auslegung des Textes schreiben sich Fans noch heute die Finger wund. Das Video von Anton Corbijn ist eines der besten von DM überhaupt. Mit anderen Worten: Never Let Me Down Again ist einer der wichtigsten Popsongs, die je erschienen sind, auf allen Ebenen.
6. Personal Jesus (1990)
Violator – das siebte Album von Depeche Mode – gilt noch heute als das einflussreichste in der Band-Geschichte überhaupt. Und Personal Jesus legte als erste Single die Latte sehr, sehr hoch. Nachdem Fletcher, Gahan, Gore und Wilder mit Music For The Masses (1987) auch in den USA endgültig den Durchbruch geschafft hatten und sich die Superstar-Jacken anziehen konnten, stand beim Nachfolger alles auf dem Spiel. Gut, dass es der persönliche Jesus schnell richtet und einordnet. 1990 klingen Depeche Mode wie neu – modern, in Teilen technoid oder rockend-rockig wie bei diesem Song. Runderneuert und fit für die Zukunft. Der neue Sound ist nicht nur den durchweg brillanten Songs zuzuschreiben, sondern auch der Arbeit des Produzenten Flood und dem legendären DJ und Engineer François Kervorkian, der diesen Track trotz aller offensichtlichen Parameter butterweich und detailverliebt mischte und in ein einzigartiges Kapitel der Band-Geschichte verwandelte.
7. Clean (1990)
Die Abschlussstücke von DM-Alben sind nie 0815-Rauswerfer, sondern im Gegenteil meistens absolute Highlights, die die Stimmung der Platten nochmal komplett umdrehen. Wäre Violator eine TV-Serie, dann wäre Clean einer der krassesten Cliffhänger, die jemals gesendet wurden. Gebettet auf ein Science-Fiction-Symphonieorchester kämpft Sänger Dave Gahan mit sich selbst. Er will den radikalen Bruch mit der Vergangenheit, verspricht einen Neustart, geläutert und vorsichtig optimistisch. Er ist „clean“, zumindest so clean wie noch nie zuvor. Das klingt heute wie eine nicht in Erfüllung gegangene Prophezeiung. Sein Absturz im echten Leben sollte erst noch folgen – wir kommen darauf zurück.
8. Walking In My Shoes (1993)
Über dem Album Songs Of Faith And Devotion wären Depeche Mode fast zerbrochen. Die Aufnahmen waren zäh, die Kommunikation befand sich auf dem Nullpunkt, die anschließende Tour geriet zum Desaster. Hatte Martin Gore seinem Sänger Dave Gahan drei Jahre zuvor noch Clean ins Mikro notiert, war dieser nun auf Heroin. Dass die Platte fertig wurde, ist ein Wunder. Und doch finden sich hier einige der besten Songs, die die Gruppe je produziert hat. Walking In My Shoes ist einer davon. Ein schwerer Groove gibt den Takt vor, abgenommen von Alan Wilder am Schlagzeug. Orchestrale Euphorie untermalt einen Refrain, der für alle Zeiten unvergessen bleiben wird. Wilder verließ nach der Tour die Band. Die Basildon-Boys waren wieder unter sich.
9. It’s No Good (1997)
Wie macht man als Band weiter, wenn der Sound-Tüftler – Alan Wilder – die Band verlassen hat, und der Sänger Dave Gahan weiterhin drogenabhängig ist? Man versucht einfach, ein weiteres Album aufzunehmen. Mit dem Produzenten Tim Simenon (Bomb The Bass) entstand eine LP, die fast nicht fertig geworden wäre: Am 28. Mai 1996 wurde Gahan mit einer Überdosis eingeliefert, er war klinisch für zwei Minuten tot. Diesen andauernden Kampf hört man auch It’s No Good an. Der Sound ist roh und unverfälscht und lässt das epische Moment von Depeche Mode in neuem Licht erstrahlen.
10. Cover Me (2017)
Als Songwriter hat Sänger Dave Gahan vergleichsweise wenig Spuren in der Diskografie von Depeche Mode hinterlassen. Erst seit 2005 wird er als Schreiber geführt. Auf dem – noch – aktuellen Album Spirit legt er zusammen mit seinen Partnern Christian Eigner (Live-Schlagzeuger der Band) und Peter Gordeno (Live-Keyboarder) einen der schönsten und besten Band-Songs aller Zeiten vor. Eine Ballade wie aus dem Bilderbuch des Pop, mit starkem Text und der mittlerweile typischen Zickigkeit in der Produktion. Blubbernde Synths treffen auf eine Vision der Zukunft, die zuletzt vielleicht Pink Floyd in einem ganz anderen Zusammenhang in einer ebenso anderen Epoche formulierten. Und: mit besonders prägnantem Outro, das die Melancholie mit schillernden Regenbogenfarben besonders gut und einzigartig erfahrbar macht.
